DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARS

For the uninitiated, the world of automobiles and its linguistics can often be puzzling. While the automotive industry's jargon is vast and seemingly unending, we hope to acquaint you with the most vital terms in reference to car types with this post.

# HATCHBACK

# SEDAN
# MPV
# SUV
# CROSSOVER
# COUPE
# CONVERTIBLE
# STATION WAGON

Here's a basic definations of the above mentioned !

1. HATCHBACK

A hatchback is a car with a hatch-type rear door that opens upwards and often a shared volume for the passenger and cargo areas.

2. SEDAN a.k.a SALOON

The current definition of a sedan is a car with a closed body (i.e. a fixed metal roof) with the engine, passengers and cargo in separate compartments. This broad definition does not differentiate sedans from various other car body styles, but in practice the typical characteristics of sedans are:
  • B-pillar (between the front and rear windows) that supports the roof
  • two rows of seats
  • three-box design with the engine at the front and the cargo area at the rear
  • a less steeply sloping roofline than a coupé, which results in increased headroom for rear passenger and a less sporting appearance.
  • a rear interior volume of at least 33 cu ft (0.93 m3)

3. MPV ( MULTI PURPOSE VEHICLE)

These are a little bigger than a hatchback and almost looks like a hatchback that has been extended to accommodate another row of people. Used as people carriers. They can carry around 5-7 people.

4. SUV ( SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLE)

Sport-utility vehicleSUV  is an automotive classification, typically a kind of car with off-road vehicle features like raised ground clearance and ruggedness, and available four-wheel drive
Many SUVs are built on a light-truck chassis but operated as a family vehicle, and though designed to be used on rougher surfaces, most often used on city streets or highways.

5. CROSSOVER

A crossover is a vehicle with SUV styling features that is based on a passenger car platform. Crossovers have ride, handling, performance and fuel economy characteristics similar to cars and are only intended for light off-road use.
For many car experts, the difference between the two is simple: A crossover is based on a car's platform, while an SUV uses the chassis of a truck. The result is that crossovers use "unibody" architecture, meaning the body and frame are one piece, while SUVs use a "body on frame" design. In that case, the body is built separately from the frame and placed together later.

6. COUPE

A coupé is having a closed body, usually with limited rear volume, a fixed roof of which a portion may be openable, at least two seats in at least one row, two side doors and possibly a rear opening, and at least two side windows.

7. CONVERTIBLE

convertible is a passenger car that can be driven with or without a roof in place. The methods of retracting and storing the roof vary between models. A convertible allows an open-air driving experience, with the ability to provide a roof when required.
Convertible roofs are made of folding material. Other types of demountable roofs include retractable hardtops (often constructed from metal or plastic) and detachable hardtops (where a metal or plastic roof is manually removed and often stored in the trunk).

8.  STATION WAGON

A car with a longer body than usual, incorporating a large carrying area behind the seats and having an extra door at the rear for easy loading; an estate car.
